The Gold Beach area of the Southern Oregon Coast is considered by residents as the "Banana Belt" of Oregon. Winter ocean storms may pass through to the East, but it is not uncommon to find sunny days and 60 degree temperatures, too. Summers are considered temperate. Burke House is 5 miles upriver--above the tidal fluctuations and the marine fog--and is usually warmer than at the coast. Breezes off the river cool the warm summer days. Peace, quiet, relaxing at Burke House is like no other location. Outdoors, there is always the rippling sound of the Rogue River to soothe the stress from each person. There are books to read, satellite TV, DVD player with a few favorite videos (or bring your own favorites to play). Relax in the deck hot tub/spa, or just enjoy being with family and friends.

About 5 miles West are the beautiful Southern Oregon beaches: walking, beachcombing, picnics, wading and swimming (for the brave), or just being soothed by the constant motion and sound of the waves pushing up onto the sand. North of the Rogue River, accessible from the North Jetty or from the Ophir Wayside Rest Area is Bailey Beach. South of the City of Gold Beach, easily accessible from the Visitor's Center or from the highway, is South Beach, a wide sandy area perfect for family activities.
